Guess What? We Have Shipped!!!

Today we reached a HUGE milestone; we got all of the residual knives left from our first batch in from the silicone factory this morning and after a day filled with cleaning, boxing, labeling and trips to the post office we have now shipped ALL of the remaining Kickstarter orders to people that gave us addresses.

Again, thank you for all of your patience and support - we never could have gotten this far without you!

We've Started Shipping!

More exciting news, we stated shipping ELITE knives yesterday from this week's production. We are receiving finished knives from the factory in batches (we got another 25 yesterday) and are sending them out as they come to us.

Just as a reminder, many of you Kickstarter backers have not sent us your addresses. If your one of those people we kindly ask that you get it to us this week so that we can get you your knife as quickly as possible.

We're Finally Running Production Knives Through The Molds! Wohoo!

I wanted to let everyone know that we started running our production PRO and ELITE knives through the molds this morning. Barring any more unforeseen issues, we intend to run the injection molding machines for the rest of today and tomorrow and then start shipping our pre-orders early next week. Have a look below - they're pretty snazzy! If your wondering why it's taken so long to get this point - the factory has had the blades in hand since early May - then I'd like to share a little back story of how we got here.

San Sebastian Knives Hot Off The Press!

San Sebastian Knives Hot Off The Press!

About a month ago we finally got to the front of the queue to run parts with our silicone molding factory - it took about 2 months of waiting for our turn because they have limited production capacity and a backlog of client projects right now. The factory, prudently made us some test knives for approval - these are the clear handled ones we posted in our last update and on social media. Those knives were about 90% right - they felt great and worked really well but there were some cosmetic issues which needed improvement. The factory agreed to make additional changes to the mold. And then, as has somehow become the norm with this project, Murphy's law intervened. Once they started tweaking the molds bad things happened. The first modifications were to remove the scuff marks which were consistently showing up on the butt of the grip. These changes altered the way the liquid silicone entered the chamber and the result what that knives started shattering (under the tremendous hydraulic pressure of the liquid silicone).

My science nerd side thought this was pretty cool but it definitely wasn't getting us closer to the goal of shipping. So the mold went back under the knife for more modifications. After a few cycles of altering and testing we were down to pretty minor cosmetic issues again which you can see as the shiny spot here.

Eventually (aka yesterday), the factory got is all dialed in. The frustrating part is that each change took about a week of work, cost money and required time to test on a production machine. In short order another month had slipped away.

Despite all of the frustrations detailed above, all the money spent (as of right now, it has cost us about 5x what we raised in the Kickstarter to get to this point), all of the immense aggravation with blade production, it feels worth it. I think that we made an awesome knife. Fingers crossed you'll have yours in hand shortly to judge for yourself.

The Custom Knives Have Shipped!!!

Hey faithful supporters, the moment everyone’s been waiting for is here – we started shipping knives today. The CUSTOM knives from our Kickstarter campaign went out this morning!

This came after 3 weeks of additional sanding, finishing and edge prep work that we weren’t expecting – we were not 100% satisfied with how they originally came out so we stripped them down and did it all over again. That’s hours and hours of fine hand sanding on each knife. You can see the finished product below and we’ll let the results speak for themselves.

We are expecting that the silicone gripped PRO and ELITE knives will be in shortly and we'll start shipping those orders out as soon as we have them.

Silicone Production Samples Are In!

This morning, after nearly a year of tireless work, we received our first #SanSebastian silicone production samples made with our high-tech, professional steel molds! These were fabricated in translucent silicone to troubleshoot the turbulence/flow patterns of the liquid material but our inner engineers are digging the #howthingswork aesthetic of seeing the counterweights/mechanical attachment points inside.

We're Getting Closer!

Hey everyone apologies for not posting for a little while. As those of you who have been following our Kickstarter are probably aware, we have had some difficulties over the past few months with getting our suppliers to deliver blades to us on time. We have avoided saying anything publicly because honestly it's not our style to call other people out on their shortcomings. Ultimately it's irrelevant where the blame lies, you ordered your knives from us and we take full responsibility for being behind schedule. What I will say is that no one is more frustrated by about waiting for the blades to come in than we are.

I wanted to take this opportunity to share a few pieces of recent positive news. First off, the initial samples of our production blades have started arriving and we have begun the process of attaching and testing our latest version of our NextGrip™ handles.

Secondly, I am told that the first shipment of CUSTOM blades is set to be mailed to us this week. Once we have them in hand, we'll start lasering your names on them and machining custom grips from the scans you have already sent us - the files are all ready to run.

The remainder of our blades are making slow but steady process. Both the PRO and ELITE lines are at the grinders now. Once that's finished they'll need to be sent to heat treat, branded and sharpened.

Third, we recently had the honor of co-sponsoring the annual Bitten food conference in New York. We got to speak with some amazing people in the industry and continue to build our network of contacts. Naz and Emily did a FANTASTIC job of organizing the whole thing. If you are a foodie like us, it's totally worth checking out next year!

And lastly, for those of you in Chicago THIS week we'll have a booth at the International Housewares Association show (the world's largest kitchen show). If you find yourself at McCormick place for the event please drop by the "Inventor's Corner" and say hi - we'd love to see you and show you the latest progress!

As always, we are eternally grateful for your support! The last few months have been really tough on us - no one wants to accelerate this process more than we do. Thanks for sticking with us through all of highs and lows of this process.

New Knife Rolls are In!

It's been 8 months since we started designing our NextGen knife roll with Kevlar protective inserts and I am pleased to announce that the first production bags arrived at our loading dock this afternoon. A lot of hard work, headaches, heartaches, research, learning and love went into these bags and we are thrilled with the result. We are also extremely proud that of the fact that these rolls are made in the US by talented artisans. Everything from the leather working to the sewing to the custom woven Kevlar was done right here in America. We hope that you get years of fun and enjoyment out of them!
